What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout the making process of our music video, digipak and magazine advert we have gained audience feedback, whether it verbal (class discussions) or written (questionnaires). We have thought long and hard about the comments we were given about improvement for our work and we have taken most of it on board as I would like our media products to be the best possible standard they can be.
Firstly we created a questionnaire at the start of the course, to see if there were particular things that was expected within the products we were designing, it was also to find out our target audience. Below is a screen shot of the questionnaire which we designed:

The first 5 questions were asked to see who our target audience were, this was useful as we could then design our music video, digipak and magazine advert to their specifications. The last 3 questions were designed to help us find out particular things that our target audience expected to find in media products, things that would draw them into buying a digipak, and into watching the music video over and over again.
Question 6: This was asked so that the audience could give us a vague idea to the sorts of thing they expected in a music video, the feedback which we gained is below:
As you can see the main thing which was expected in a music video was the artists/bands, this shows that the people we asked prefer a more performance based music video where it shows the artist and/or band singing and playing instruments. We took this into account as our music video is mainly performance based, although it does have quite a lot of narrative which we believe to be equally as important. The results which we got from question 5 explain that narrative is important, as most people like to see a story within a music video, the results are below:
'Yes I like music and I like videos, so put the two together and you come up with a wonderful form of communication.'
'They give a visual form to music instead of just listening to it.'
'They can add depth to the song. They’re more entertaining than just music'
'Adds depth to the song.'
'Music videos often help visualise what the song is about.'
'When you're watching and listening to music and TV it makes it more interesting.'
'I like them :).'
'Because they are enjoyable to watch it, i also think they are important as they explain this song.'
Question 7 and 8: These questions helped when designing our digipak and magazine advert. he audience feedback we obtained gave us an idea of what our target audience would look for on the front cover of a digipak and coincidentally on our magazine advert, as it seemed that brand identity is best across all of our media products.
We took into account the highest scores on question 7, the bright bold colours and the close-up of the artist/band as you can see from our progressing digipak and magazine advert below:

I have also had formative feedback throughout the making process of our music video, digipak and magazine advert. The way in which we gained this audience feedback was with showing our music videos, digipaks and magazine adverts in class to our peers and explaining them. They then gave us feedback to what they liked and what we could improve and how.
The feedback which we got is as follows:
We have also placed our video onto YouTube for the public to see, they then gave us constructive, critical feedback about what worked and what didn't work.

As you can see one person who commented said that they liked the concept of the puppet and how we linked the lyrics to the visuals, they also liked the memory shots and how we portrayed them, with black and white and the old style film reel, they believed that this added to the emotion. Although, like many other people, they thought that the guitar could have benefited from a lead so it actually looked as if the artist was playing it. They also believed that it may have looked better with more camera movement, as most of our shots were still.
The feedback which we got is as follows:
- Some of the shots are too bright and don't fit well with the gloomy, emo style of song.
- These were the shots that were over exposed, we took their comment on board and placed a brightness and contrast tool over the image to help sort it out, in the end we re-shot those particular scenes as it still did not look right.
- They also noticed some accidents within our music video, either where there was an image in the wrong place, e.g. we had Kate picking up the guitar twice which didn't make sense.
- There were some syncing issues found within our video, which were pointed out
- We were told to put some of the piano shots back into our music video as we had got rid of most of them because we thought that it consisted of too many piano shots, but it was brought to our attention that we had gone too far the other way and had too less piano shots.
- On the digipak and magazine advert we were told that some of the text was hard to see, because of this we used the bevel and emboss tool to create a shadow behind most of the text so it's easier to be seen.
- On the magazine advert we were told to change the release date as OUT NOW didn't seem to fit with our genre.
- They were attracted to the font and colour on our digipak and magazine advert, as they said it looked Gothic and fitted well with our genre.
- They really liked the puppet shots, as they thought it was a great idea to link the lyrics to the visuals.
- The lighting was also a big hit, especially the spot light in the puppet shots and the piano shots as your main focus was on the artist being promoted.

We also placed our finished music video onto Facebook as it is a great way to share our video with people our age, 15 - 21 year olds (our target audience), and because the people we aimed our video at were demographic, we could get the most constructive and informed feedback.
Below is a screen shot of our finished music video on Facebook:
It is finally done! Mine & Gemma Chambers Music Video for Media :D If you could give us your feedback (constructive most helpful) as we will need it to complete our evaluation, thanks :)
As you can see from the information we got from Facebook, most people enjoyed our music video, especially the puppet shots. Things that they weren't that keen on is the instruments that we used, like the guitar, as it doesn't look like the actor can play it, and that it would have benefited from a lead, also some of our audience said that the performance quality could be improved, e.g. when the singer is singing loudly, the performer is just speaking the words quietly.
Things that went down well was the puppet shots like I said, also the black and white memory shots and the slow motion was said to emphasise the emotion.
I have also made another 2 questionnaires which I will give out to my peers when they have watched our music video and looked over our digipak and magazine advert, this is so they can tell us in detail exactly what they think of our media products. I handed them out to sixth from students at my school who also took media, this is so I could gather some professional constructive criticism, and so they understood the terms which I used within the questionnaires.
Below are copies of the questionnaires I handed out:

Rob Watson some of the performance quality could be improved, like when the singer is singing loudly, the performer is just speaking the words quietly, other than that it's an enjoyable video to watch :)

Frank Hinley love the concept but few points some of the dubbing is slightly outta sync, the guitar could do with a lead so it looks plugged in or used an acoustic, and some of the time it looks like the girl is not/does'nt know how to play the instruments

Nico Grymnir Davidson Good concept throughout the video but the lip synching doesn't match the lyrics in parts. Like Frank said, the guitar could do with a lead to make it look like its plugged in and maybe an acoustic for the softer parts of the song. Overall, pretty good.

Stephen Rendall Love the puppet idea synch is a problem and I'm sorry the actor has a lot to be desired but it's good

Lawrence ExclamationMark Yognaught Really nice interpretation of the song, I like how it shows a mixture of both the literal meaning of the lyrics, and the hidden.
I thought the puppet idea was excellent especially the use of height on the puppeteer.
I think some of the shots could have benefitted from a panning camera instead of the direct cuts (more so where there isn't alot going on in the shot).
Synch was perfect on piano, but I'm not so sure about the guitar.

Lawrence ExclamationMark Yognaught Also I felt the last two minutes were better than the first two, so much more emotion is conveyed which matches the build-up in the song as well :)... excuse the excessive wall of text >.< this is what happens when you critisice someones work whilst writing an assignment. Really good effort though! :)

Shannon Westwick I think the use of black and white and slow motion was really good as it showed the memories really well and in some of the slow motion shots you could really see the emotion! good variety of shots too :)

Music video questionnaire:
Below is a screen shot of our music video questionnaire:

Below are some photographs of our filled in questionnaires:
Below are the results that we obtained from our audience feedback:
Question 1 - Did you enjoy the music video?

Question 2 - Did it make you want to keep watching, to see what we next?
Everybody who filled in the questionnaire answered yes to this question.
Explain why:
Yes - 'It was very gripping, the varied shots were very interesting to watch, it kept me engaged
throughout. The use of black and white and colour was exciting too'
'It was exciting and the lyrics worked well with the camera shots and gave a clear
understanding of the lyrics to the audience'
'Tom and Kate's acting'
'Strong narrative and it looked professional'
'It was exciting, the editing and all the techniques used, like the transformations,
worked very well'
'It was interesting'
'I wanted to know what happened to the characters'
Acting was good, varied camera shots kept it exciting'
Question 3 - On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the least and 10 being the most) how effective did you think the camera work and editing was?
Explain why:
10 - 'Good dolly shot'
9 - 'There were clean cuts, a mixture between the length of the cuts, etc'
'They all worked well with one another and kept the video flowing'
'It related to the storyline, e.g. close ups when necessary'
'Good range of shots with clear meaning throughout. Editing fitted the pace of the song
perfectly'
'Some very good shot types - dolly, extreme close-up and low angle'
8 - 'Maybe a bit more narrative, other than that really good'
'The editing, slow motion, etc, was good'
Question 4 - Did it make you want to watch the music video again

Explain why:
Yes - 'It was interesting and kept me engaged throughout'
'The shots were very interesting and lighting worked well with portraying the emotion'
'Looks so professional'
'Because I found it interesting and relates to individuals everyday'
'Entertaining to watch'
No - 'Once is enough'
Question 5 - Was there any part of the music video that you didn't understand?
'There is an extreme close up of the female performers face at 0.42 seconds, i don't understand why?'
'No'
'When did Tom get so evil?'
Question 6 - What do you believe to be the best part of the music video?

As you can see there was a mixture of opinions as to what was the best part of the music video. The most common answers were editing, camera and lighting with almost everyone saying at least one of those.
Question 7 - Is the video representative of the genre pop-punk/rock-pop?
All the people that I asked answered yes to this question except 1
Why:
Yes - 'The costume, lighting, actors, make-up, props and setting'
'Use of props for example the guitar'
'The locations, costumes and props'
'Clothes, make-up, etc'
'Costume/lighting'
'Conventions like costume'
'Use of costume and narrative'
No - 'Kate's not a punk'
Question 8 - Does the video successfully promote the artist?
Everybody who answered my questionnaire said that the video successfully promotes the artist. Which is great as that was the whole point of our work, to successfully promote the artist/s through the main task (music video) and the ancillary texts (digipak and magazine advert).
Question 9 - Is there anything that you would change about the music video to improve it?
'Not really, everyone has their own interpretations, you have successfully done this'
'No'
'Maybe make the artist look more punk/emo with big bold make-up, etc'
'Not really, great video'
'The girl needs to play the guitar properly'
'Ratio of narrative and performance'
'Variety of locations'
Question 10 - On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest) how do you rate this music video?

As you can see from the pie chart above, most people rated our music video a 9, with two people rating it at 10.
What I have learned from the audience feedback:
If I were to do it again I would make sure that the artist is performing to the best quality as possible, also maybe ask someone who can play the guitar and piano, so it looks more realistic. I would also be more organised and film at every opportunity if possible. I would also pick a song at the beginning of the course and stick to the decision that we make, as we started filming for the Bryan Adams song and ended up changing the song and not using the footage which we shot before.
There were certain aspects of our video which went down the best, these being the memory shots, where we added the film reel and the black and white effect. Also the slow motion effects were said to highlight the emotion throughout the video. And finally the puppet shots were liked, especially the height on the puppeteer as it made him seem more powerful which was exactly what we were going for. Also the interpretation of the lyrics and the narrative, e.g. the puppet and memories, went down very well.
There were parts of the video that the audience did not like so much, these were the artists ability to play the instruments, like the guitar, for example. This could have improved by using a lead on the electric guitar and even using an acoustic for the softer parts of the song
Also a few people commented on the performer and the performance quality, when playing the instruments and throughout the music video, our audience said that it could have been improved by the performer belting out the lyrics when the song is, not just speaking the words quietly which was said to have happened in some parts of our music video.
But overall I think that our music video went down well, most people liked our video as you can see from the pie charts in the evaluation and the comments we obtained from Facebook and YouTube. Also our digipak and magazine advert was said to resemble real media products and effectively represented the artist within all of our media products..:D
